Extra Credit

You can turn in extra credit writing assignments any time. How much each one is worth depends on how much you write - the more you write, the more points you receive.

You can also get 10 points of extra credit for attending tutoring on Thursday after school.

Extra Credit Writing Assignments:

1) Brochure:
Many parents worry about helping their students be successful in school. Create a piece of writing that could become a how-to brochure for parents: How to Help Your Child Succeed in School.

2) Admirable Traits:
Most of the time when someone is admired in America, it's because the person has gone "from rags to riches" or has become an "overnight sensation." Yet, we often admire ordinary people in our everyday lives not because of their ability to make money, but because of specific personality traits.

Think about the qualities you typically admire in others. This process might require a kind of backwards thinking: you will probably have to think of the people you admire first, then decide what quality those people have in common. Write an essay in which you describe the qualities you admire and why.

3) Highway:
The state has created a plan to add a second highway exit to help shoppers access a busy shopping mall. The only problem is that the new exit will move the access road 500 yards closer to a near-by elementary school. Teachers and parents at the school complain that moving the road closer will increase noise at the school and provide unnecessary distractions. The state planners have included privacy fences to help cut down on the problems, but the protesters are unsatisfied. What is your position on this issue? Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper stating your position and supporting it with convincing reasons.
