English 3C/4C Overview

 First Semester

 Week 1 - 6
 Classroom introductions and procedures
 Introduction to 10th grade literary terms
 Begin studying vocabulary Words of the Week (5 weekly vocabulary words)
 Begin Friday quizzes on content for that week, including vocabulary
 Begin SSR in 2nd week (students start to bring silent reading book daily)
 Review the writing process
 Essay about an important transition in your life and why it was significant
 Read the following short stories in red literature textbook (books in the classroom)
    1. "Catch the Moon" by Judith Ortiz Cofer
    2. "Through the Tunnel" by Doris Lessing
    3. "Vision Quest" by Lame Deer
 Essay about transitions that the 3 characters in these short stories undergo
 Exam on what we have learned so far in weeks 1 - 6
 Progress reports go home at the end of week 6.

 Week 7 - 12
 Read and analyze the poem "Dream Deferred" by Langston Hughes
 Read the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry
 Watch the movie of the play
 Essay about allowing people to make their own decisions even if they are wrong
 Exam on what we learned in weeks 7-12
 Progress reports go home at the end of week 12.

 Week 13 -19
 Read the novel The Pearl by John Steinbeck
 Complete packets for each chapter
 Write a business letter from the perspective of a character from the novel
 The final exam will include multiple choice questions and a timed essay
 Report cards go home


 Second Semester
 
 Week 1 - 2
 Introduction to nonfiction terms
 Read nonfiction articles
 Week 3 - 6
 Read the novel Night by Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor
 Complete dialectical journals on reading
 Week 7 - 12
 Prepare for the California High School Exit Exam, taken on March 16 and 17, 2010
 Week 13
 STAR Testing
 Introduction to persuasive writing
 Read persuasive writing examples
 Week 14 - 19
 Research and write a persuasive speech on a controversial issue
 Learn and practice public speaking techniques
 Deliver speech in front of the class
 The final exam will include multiple choice questions and a timed essay
 Report cards go home
